Energy Portfolio & Rates

Energy Portfolio

The energy industry continues to evolve to meet the needs of our customers and the environment.  We’re mindful of the major topics that affect the electrical utility industry. We have a value-focused, practical and environmentally-sensitive strategy to ensure sufficient generation, competitive prices and reliable service for decades to come.

Evergy’s diverse energy mix results in affordable, reliable electricity generation. Like many utility companies around the country, we depend on coal as a price-stable way to generate the electricity needed to supply our customers 24 hours a day. We supplement with power generated from other sources, including natural gas, fuel oil, wind, solar, nuclear, biogas and hydro. The result: a balanced portfolio that is responsive to fuel prices, environmental concerns, regulatory initiatives and other factors.

Renewables are generally not yet capable of providing uninterrupted electricity, so they can’t be relied upon to serve our customers all the time. We continually explore ways to broaden our sustainable strategy and comply with renewable energy mandates.

Rates

Evergy is a regulated electric utility operating in the states of Missouri and Kansas. The rates customers pay for electricity are regulated and approved by the Kansas Corporation Commission and the Missouri Public Service Commission.

Electricity rates reflect a number of components, including fuel costs, transmission, facility investments and environmental compliance. The prices paid for these components vary over time; the costs to install and operate other components represent additional operational expenses. As these are incorporated in rates through a rate case, or passed through to the customer via a bill rider, prices will fluctuate.
